Common Word

In October 2007, 138 Islamic scholars issued a letter to Christian leaders worldwide to unite together for the sake of peace and harmony around the shared values of Love of God and Love of Neighbor. This letter became known as "The Common Word" letter. This letter and subsequent responsed from Christians has created quite a bit of discussion. A website has been dedicated to tracking the responses of this initiative.

Below are a few resources to help you become acquainted with this letter and its significance in Muslim-Christian dialog.

A Common Word - the letter sent by Muslim scholars to Christian leaders.

Yale Divinity School response - full page ad from the New York Times, with the signatures of 300 US Christian leaders.

Torrents

Torrents are small information files that direct a torrent client to find shared files on other computers on the internet. Torrents use a piece of client software to download the shared file from someone else. Two popular torrent clients are BitTorrent and uTorrent. You will need to download and install one of these, or install a similar torrent program. Then download and load the torrent files below into your torrent program to begin downloading the file.

Although file sharing networks have received much negative publicity (and rightly so) because of the amount of porn and illegal software shared, these networks can also be used for beneficial purposes. I have included below a handful of select torrents which will enable you to download the files indicated. You will need one of the torrent clients noted above to use these files. I personally host these files on my server and know them to be virus free.

Answering Islam: The premier site for information on Apologetics to Islam from a Christian perspective. Unzip this file to a folder on your hard drive to have this valuable resource with you without needing an internet connection. Put it on your laptop and take this library of information with you on the go. You can also download this same torrent at the Answering Islam website here.

Fox News: Radical Islam In Its Own Words: A Fox News special aired aired in 2007. This is the mp4 version of the video without commercials.

Fox News: Murder in the Family - Honor Killing in America:  A Fox News documentary about a spate of honor killings that have become public knowledge over the last few years.

Fox News: Honor Killing in America: A documentary specifically focused on the murder of Amina and Sarah Said by their father in a Dallas suburb. Aired August 2010.

The Qur'an: A documentary by Antony Thomas aired in the UK on BBC Channel 4 in 2008. This video used to be available via YouTube and other movie sharing networks but appears to have been taken down, likely due to pressure from Islamic groups who disapprove of the critical analysis of the Qur'an documented in this video.
